I hate this heat. Friday night had a splitting headache and my supper set like a rock in my stomach. Still did not feel good Saturday Morning so we did not go to Brawl at the Crooked Dragon Tavern. Felt better later but stomach still is a little unsettled.

Had a great practice tonight. Badger wussed out on us but a knight from Trimaris is working in Toledo for a week or so and was at the practice, Sir Killian the Bruce. And before you ask, of course I knew him already, it's not like he's from Lochac;-)

I fought a couple of sets of passes with him as did many of the others and then I marshelled for melee practice. We had around ten fighters, with about half being pretty new so we would fight 2-3 melees then would discuss them then fight another set. One of the new guys asked some really good questions.

Saturday at Siege of Talnovale was the first I really felt halfway decent fighting since I hurt my foot in Feb. I was able to even fight the after fighting Unbelt practice. My endurance needs rebuilding but the back is not bothering me much (untill I'm done fighting and the adrenaline drops off).

So shiny, brand new with mirror polish. It'll be a shame to mark them up. Since this pair were made to my measurements they fit better than the pair that were stolen. I'll be using the left more than the right since it is great protection with my shield.

My college roommate Scott came out Friday to hang out. We went shooting at a range near where I live. He has gotten into guns and shooting in the last couple of years, and has over a half dozen pistols. I haven't shot a gun since my college rifle class and hadn't shot a pistol since just after my Dad died, over 21 years ago. I did pretty good for not shooting in so long, had some pretty good groupings. Scott was upset because he had loaded a bunch of .45 cal ammo since I have my Dad's 1911, but the amount of powder the guide said to use wasn't enough to clear the brass and cock the slide. So we just fired his 9mm Autos and .38/.357 revolvers. After we got supper we came back to my place and watched 2 hours of NCIS, Brotherhood of the Wolf and 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag and just hung out and talked. That was the point, even when we are at SCA events together we are usually two busy fighting, fencing, etc to really get to hang out together. Got to bed about 4 am and he headed home before I woke up.

Went to Rose Tourney this weekend. This is one of the most special events in the Kingdom in my opinion. It is all about honoring the Ladies of the Rose (and Viscountesses) who each sponsor a team of fighters. The format for the last several years has been each Rose present has a team of five combatants, four armored; a member of the chivalry and three unbelted fighters, and one rapier combatant. For each pairing of teams the combatants match up and fight single combats with the victory determined by the teams win loss record (chivalry fight chivalry, unbelts fight unbelts, and rapier fights rapier.)

A little history here; The Rose Tourney started as something added on to an existing event and it was really three separate tourneys, one each for Chivalry, unbelted fighters, and rapier fighters. The first improvement was in holding it as its own event. This allowed time for more pomp and circumstance and a greater focus on the enjoyment of the spectators. The next was the current team format I described above. I have a bias toward this format for two reasons; the first Rose Tourney I fought in I was knocked out by one of my sponsoring Rose's other fighters and the first time the current team format was used I was on the team that won for Alys Katherine.

One of the big misconceptions about Rose Tourney is that you have to be invited by a Rose before the event to fight. This is not true, though some Roses arrange their teams before the event many do not or do not completely and choose all or part of their team from those that are there to fight that day. I have only once gone to a Rose Tourney where I was already sponsored, the rest of the ones I have attended I have had the great fortune to be asked that day to fight for a Lady of the Rose. It really bothered me one year that there were not enough unbelted fighters for all the Roses to choose from (five fought on two different teams, I would have been the sixth but one more fight showed up.) There is always enough pick up fighting available to make the event worthwhile to fight at whether or not you get chosen for a team. And regardless this event is about honoring the Roses. Another thing I have heard is people say, "I'm not good enough a fighter to be chosen." Again this event is not about you it is about the Roses and prowess is only one reason they may choose someone to fight on their team, and to many it is not the most important. But enough ranting on this topic, if you fight go to Rose Tourney and make yourself available.

So I'm in the group of fighters that have not yet been sponsored for a team. They call us out to the field so the Roses that need to fill their teams can choose. I am immediately called over by Duchess Rebekah, and asked to be on her team, taking the place of Captain Crispin who was supposed to be on her team but did not show up (a high crime it is standing up this noble lady, I'm sure Lubeck must be to Blame somehow.) Rebekah has always held a special place in my heart as nine years ago she was the first to sponsor me in a Rose Tourney, that time I replaced Caldador who had gotten sick and could not make it. (We were thinking it had been ten years, but I checked the OP since I was made Red Company that day and it was only nine.) What made it even cooler was the team included Duke Bardolf, Baron Robert Downey, and Baron Gintauris good friends and extended SCA family from the Midlands. The team was finished out with ha young fencer from the Midlands name Stephan.

I fought the whole day with sword and shield. The team won our first round versus Viscountess Astrid's team. I fought first and won my fight. The second round was versus Duchess Caitlin's Team I fought last versus Lucius, another von Brandenburg. I legged him after a number of close exchanges, then he hit me with a light shot to the hip that brought me out of fighting the fight and into thinking (where did that hit? was it on my armor? no it was below, ok it is light then), thinking while in range is bad and he hit me a good shot to the head while my focus off. The teams had been tied so his team won and we went the loser bracket. I still am having back muscle problems (thought I have recovered from the misalignment I had last week) and I stiffened up waiting to the last fight in that round which also did not help, both Sabah and Brannos noticed it in the fight and said something. I talked about this with Rebekah and for the rest of the rounds she called me first to fight. The next round I faced Warder Christian Fournier fighting for Countess Sir Fern. He had polearm and I ran him down and legged him, his pole blocked the first shot after he dropped to his knees and as my next came in he dropped his guard and lowered his head taking the shot on the back of his helm. In the exchange that I had legged him I had also taken one arm and he had lowered his guard rather that prolong the fight. Our Team was victorious in what was declared the "Championship of the Midlands" (of the two teams I was the only non Midlander and I fight with the Haus with Midlands at Pennsic.) The next round we faced Duchess Sabine's team and I fought Magrat. On salute your opponent she gave me one of her flying hugs. Sir Guerric said something in surprise and I shorted out his mind with, "its more fun when she's wearing spikes." (Going back years to a Pennsic story involving a spiked bodice she had borrowed.) I could do little but come out looking like a huge bully as I walked her into the corner of the the list. She got loose and I contained here again along the side of the list and legged then killed her. Our team lost this round though putting us out of the tourney.

I got out of armor and rested till court, I missed who won. After court we followed Sabah and Monica back to their place and got pizza for supper. Sabah and I are known in the Haus for staying up talking most of the night when together but we were both so sore and tired we went to bed shortly after eating. Other highlights of the day included; getting to talk with Sir Janos who has not been active the last couple years, seeing Lucius's lady Heather's face as she got to go through my tourney chest and choose the ransom earned by her lord for defeating me in tourney, getting to see Gavin and Caileich before they move away to the East Kingdom, and seeing Cadogan being put on vigil for the Order of the Chivalry

My back has been doing a lot better yesterday and today. Still sorry I missed Crown, sounded like it was a good one. Ended up getting together with my gaming friends and playing Warhammer Sunday so it was not a complete loss.

Not going to Crown this weekend. I already wasn't fighting this Crown due to the job situation. My back is out the worst it has been in ages. (The recent problems have been muscular conditioning after being laid up with the foot and not skeletal/nerve related.) Went to the chiropracter yesterday and I was so bad he was willing to give me his home number in case it was so bad I couldn't make it to Tuesday.

It is better today, I don't have the severe pain I had yesterday. But I decided that I would just be uncomfortable at best for two and a half days if I went. It has been years since I have missed a Crown, and when I have missed a Spring Crown I have always been at MarCon in Columbus instead not sitting on my butt at home.

And what put me in this condition? Wednesday night I fell asleep on my couch watching TV, something that happens at least once a week. When I woke up it was out.

Here is the scroll for my nieces Award of the Dragon's Treasure (Midrealm children's service award). It was done by Lady Magrat and received at Baron Wars. Unfortunately it is a little big for my scanner and I lost some of the illumination at the bottom and left sides.

Ehrenfried ended up not able to come. Scott, Dalilia, and Manny got here around midnight Friday. Scott and I forced ourselves to go to sleep about a quarter after 3am. Had to get up at 6:00 to take the big pavillion to the site. Scott helped hook up the trailer and came out with me and Ma came out later with Shantel, Dalilia, and Manny. Set the pavillion up in high winds, that was fun.

The high winds lasted all day and the temperature dropped a bit from morning. It was great for fighting but a little cold for everyone else.

Since the foot healed up I've been having lots of trouble with my back muscles tying up when I stand for a length of time. Not walking for a month let me get really out of condition. The low back pain climbs and climbs until I sit for a bit. I was able to go farther Saturday that I have been lately. I was done after the bridge battles; skipped the wall and unbelt practice. Fighting a meat grinder rez or unbelts while distracted by pain is a recipe for getting injured.

Ma made von B dress favors for my branch of the house and we passed them out to those that were there. I had found gold bear charms that match the bear on the Haus Mailander badge and Ma sewed those on above the bear paw patch.

Shantel received the Award of the Dragon's Treasure. It was the first piece of business at Court. Magrat made her a lovely scroll.

After court was over we went out to eat at the Blue Pacific Grill, a mongolian BBQ in Perrysburg.

As a post Baron Wars celibration the Marshes is going to see Star Trek today and it is time to get ready and go.

House cleaning for Baron Wars. Ma, Shantel, Scott, Dalila, Manny, and Ehrenfried are all crashing here tonight. I guess it balances out since I don't have to set up and take down my pavillion this weekend.

Got a call from Aerotek today. The hiring manager for the jobs I'm up for is working on filling another position first. So I got to wait for him to finish with that before he gets to interviewing me. Haven't heard at all form First Solar.

I had an interview today at the local office of the company that contacted me after I put my resume on Monster. They are a scientific staffing company. Just before I was going to leave for the interview, literally a block or so from where I had worked the last 10 years, I got a call from the guy that contacted me. He had just talked to my former manager and was going to call another of my references.

They are filling two openings with a glass company just south of Detroit (about an hour drive for me) either of which is a possibility for me with one a slightly better fit to what I have been doing the last 10 years. Things went well today with the local interview and my references. He is recommending me to the company and now I will have to interview, probably a couple of times with them. If they decide to hire me I would start contract to hire through the staffing company.

Also there is still the chance that someone buys my old lab from my previous employer and I could go back there.

Finally getting a real start to Job hunting. I made contact with a few more references this week and applied for a job with First Solar in Perrysburg. The guy running the lab there worked for Monarch back before I was hired 10 years ago, and the manager/owner that hired me at Monarch works there now (and is one of my references). I also posted my resume to Monster through our local newspaper's website. This morning I had two hits from there. One was a sales/marketing spam but the other looks good. I deleted the first and replied to the second. Now if only the weather would clear up, I feel better. The sinus and cough has lingered once the cold wet weather hit.

While typing this I got a reply from the job lead and will call or get a call from him on Monday.
